Is diabetes hereditary?

Is diabetes hereditary? Main types of diabetes are – Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes. There is a third type called Diabetes insipidus, which is a rare disorder unrelated to diabetes mellitus (sugar diabetes).

Known in the past as adult-onset or non-insulin dependent, Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition in which your body’s ability to metabolize sugar/glucose is diminished. Sugar and glucose are our body’s main source of energy. Type 2 diabetes sets in slowly and early symptoms are often confused as signs of obesity, stress or just poor diet. The symptoms often include fatigue, increased thirst, frequent urination and blurred vision. Your body, either does not produce enough insulin to balance a normal glucose level, or it fights the effect of insulin. If no timely care is taken to treat or control it, type 2 diabetes can be crippling or even life threating.

Coming back to our question “Is diabetes hereditary?” While there is no conclusive research on this question, there are factors which have been identified which provide a link to this commonly asked question. There are a number of factors, including environmental conditions that point to this link. Type 2 Diabetes is an autoimmune disease. Our own body is seen as an invader and attacked. They tend to run in families in different forms, such as rheumatoid arthritis or thyroid disorder. If any of your family members, or parents, grandparents had any of the autoimmune diseases, do not be surprised if one is afflicted with diabetes, even if they did not.

Diabetes often starts afflicting beyond the age of 40 to people who do not exercise enough, are obese and who indulge in inappropriate diet. Diets rich in fat, starch, sugar, cholesterol should be avoided. Keep away from processed and refined food and drinks.

Until now there is no real cure for type 2 diabetes. One can either prevent or delay it by proper diet, exercise and lifestyle or maintain it with insulin, medication, diet and exercise.

Your first priority should be to eat well. Start a good regimen of exercise. In particular, cardio exercises such as running, jogging or cross trainers which bring up your heart rate up to 130 or over help you metabolize sugar/glucose effectively. However, before you start, please consult your physician.

Sometimes these measures may not be enough. You may need insulin therapy or diabetes medication to manage your sugar level in the blood. Please consult your doctor as soon as possible.

Medical definition of obesity is carrying an excessive amount of body fat. This body fat is not only a cosmetic issue it is a significant health issue leading to risks such as, heart disease, heart attracts, diabetes and high-blood pressure.
